Viking Food

by Jennifer O'Rourke

One dish that the Vikings ate was Cauldron Snake whichwas a sausage . spiced with thyme and garlic . Some times the Vikings would eat cheese and smoked meats which needed no cooking. Sometimes meat was roasted on a spit or baked in a stone.

When Winter came the Vikings would either starve or they went hunting. Most Vikings lived in cold lands with hard winters. Even in good years farmers struggled to produce enough food. If there was no grain there was no bread. If there was no hay, the cattle could not survive the winter.

This gave the Vikings a tough view of life. The old and the ill were not fed well. When food was short, children were usually fed first as they were the workers of the future, but if a new baby was sick, if was left to die. No family could risk having to feed a 'useless' person for a lifetime.

In Summer there were berries to eat. In Autumn there were nuts and mushrooms. The Vikings would also eat roasting spear.

To bake bread the Vikings would use grain which had been ground to flour in a quern. The flour was mixed with yeast and water and then left to rise. Then it was baked.

Drinking horns were emptied in the gulp so it did not matter that they did not stand upright.
