Mooncoin or "Móin Dhearg" , besides
being noted as famous hurlers and sportsmen has many features to offer the
visitor and native.
Mooncoin is set in the Suir Valley between the Walsh Hills stretching from
Slieve na mBan in Tipperary in an easterly direction and the Comeragh
Mountains in Waterford.
In the distance is the lofty summit of "Tory Hill", which,
according to legend is one "foot short of being a mountain".
Woodlands and uplands mark the northerly extremity of the parish.
Dowling Hill, Corbally Hill and Carricktriss Gorse rise gracefully
overlooking the Suir on the Kilkenny side, while Coolfin, Tower Hill and
Brownswood guard the Suir on the Waterford boundary.
Mooncoin and its hinterland constantly remind us of the long and
fascinating history of the area.
South Kilkenny is rich in lore and archaeological finds, some of which are
displayed in the National Museum.
