The Gerard Manley Hopkins International Literary Festival

Takes place, each year, at the end of July, in Monasterevin, IRELAND.

For 15 years, a voluntary committee of enthusiasts in a small town in Ireland have welcomed visitors from all over the world to celebrate poetry, art literature and in particular, the life and work of poet Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Internationally recognised Hopkins scholars and lovers of Hopkins poetry assemble each year in Monasterevin. Participants read favourite Hopkins poems in relaxed surroundings. Hopkins scholars share their insights. Artists celebrate Hopkins's artistic spirit.

Always, the poetry of GM Hopkins plays a central part in the Literary Festival, ensuring that focus is kept firmly on Hopkins's POETRY, rather than an over emphasis on theories.

ADVANCE PROGRAMME

Poetry Readings by an array of international and Irish Poets form an essential part of this literary Festival. Since Hopkins was interested in Art and Music, we also organise Art Exhibitions and Concerts. A highlight is always the Classical Music Concert held in the magnificent surroundings of Moore Abbey, one-time home of John McCormack and of course, a visit to Miss Cassidy's home, where Hopkins found a welcome retreat.

We also hold Poetry Competitions. But, fear not: all this happens in a festive, holiday ambiance ! Most visitors, like Hopkins, feel 'better for the delicious bog air of Monasterevin'.
