  287. Mountain Running team member Gary Thornton gets silver in National Inter-Counties Cross Country Champs in Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan. His magnificent run has earned him a place on the Junior Irish team for the European Championships at Ferrara in Italy on December 13th. A good run from Noel Berkeley in 5th place in the Senior race helps him make the team for Italy too; Colm Rothery finishes 11th. Caroline Daly who was a surprise packet in the British Junior Champs at the end of 1997 took Bronze in the Junior Women's race; Olga Cronin and Amanda Hanly finish well up.   294. Same Junior Trial Routes as 1997 on Three Rock Mountain will be used for Irish U-18 and U-16 teams for 1998 British Junior International at Moffat, Scotland. The Junior Trial is being run in conjunction with the Dublin Peaks Race (seniors only) on the 27th September.

  297. Francis Cosgrave beats Hugh McLindon on Sugarloaf. The Sugarloaf Relay had to be cancelled due to the rather intimidating presence of an encampment of Wandering Asphalt Layers at the traditional start. The W.A.L.s had tinkered with the local ecology by dumping large amounts of refuse in what was once a beautiful start area. A straight race from a different starting point was held instead.
