Irish Schools Mountain Running Championships

After a break forced on the Association by the Foot and Mouth Disease in 2001, 2002 brought out nearly 300 runners to St. Columbas College in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin where once again their testing courses were used to great effect. The major surprise sprung on the spectators was the unexpected defeat of British & Irish Champion Peter Dalton by the Clare runner Sean Hehir of St. Flannans, Ennis.

A tremendously close finish saw the Clareman sprint clear of the North Mon man after a ding dong battle up and down the scenic course in which they were joined by the local hero Patrick Temple who at only 16 years old gave the host school its best ever result by taking the bronze medal. The new champion Hehir has a fine sporting pedigree - his father was a notable All Star hurler, but Sean seems to have the sort of athletics talent that can be taken to a world stage.
