Dublin Peaks Race report
by Douglas Barry
Alan Cox proved to be the man in form when he powered away building up an impressive lead on the climb up Three Rock Mountain in the Dublin Peaks race on Sunday 26th September 1999. The Crusaders runner built so strong a gap on the ascent between himself and runner up Eoin Keith - the winner of the Irish Trail Running Championship - that the superior descending skills of Keith were of little avail as the St. Columbas teacher disappeared into the distance.
The talented Cox whose school is at the foot of the hills used in the race and who is a power in under age race organisation - he was a major factor in the Irish Schools Mountain Running Championships - had an easy victory to win by 1 minutes and 25 secs. Junior runner David Simpson proved to be a surprisingly strong third placer. Nina Philips won the senior women's category but had to concede best female runner on the day to the perennial Jane Watt winner of the over 40 category who seems to have fully recovered from her ultra distance exploits during the summer.
