SLEEPING POSITION - PLACE YOUR BABY ON HIS OR HER BACK TO SLEEP.

The best position for a baby to sleep is on his or her back. There is no evidence that babies might be sick and choke when lying on their backs.

Some babies who require special care or who have particular medical problems need to be placed on their tummies. Your doctor, nurse or midwife will explain why. If in doubt, talk it over with them.

For babies who have been sleeping on their tummies or side, try them on their backs. They may not like the change and find it difficult to settle. If your baby will only sleep on his or her side make sure the underarm is in front of the body to prevent him or her rolling onto the tummy.

It is best if you place your baby near the foot of the cot or basket with the covers below the shoulders.

BREASTFEEDING
If at all possible babies should be breast-fed for the first few months of life, not because this on its own reduces the risk of cot death, but because it may reduce the chances of your baby getting an infection.
