Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS, commonly called Cot Death, is the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant or young child. Throughout this leaflet the term 'baby' refers to an infant or young child.

The majority of cot deaths occur during the first year of life and most of these happen between 1 and 5 months. It is, however, comparatively rare.

Because no one knows why cot death happens, there is no sure way to prevent it. Research has shown that the guidelines in this leaflet can help reduce the risk. Unfortunately, cot deaths still occur despite following these guidelines, but at least the risk is reduced.

The information in this leaflet is for everyone who looks after a baby…not just parents but other members of the family and other carers such as child minders, crèches and baby sitters.

It is important that you share this information with your family and friends.
