| SIDS - MODEL OF CARE FOR
PROFESSIONALS A message from Micheal Noonan TD, Minister for Health |
|
| The sudden and unexpected death of a child
is one of the most distressing experiences imaginable. In the aftermath
of their child's death, the support which families receive from health
care professionals can have a significant effect on the way in which they
begin to cope with their loss. The research carried out by the Irish Sudden
Infant Death Association among bereaved parents shows a need for health
professionals to have access to up-to-date information about how families
can be best supported in coming to terms with the tragedy that has occurred. The 'Model of Care' has been designed to meet precisely that need. It offers health professionals information about the procedures they need to carry out when they encounter a sudden infant death, and practical guidelines to assist them support the family involved. The Department of Health has supported the ISIDA for a number of years in its research and educational work to reduce the incidence of the syndrome. I commend the Association on this latest initiative, and I am very pleased to have been in a position to provide financial support for it. I believe that the 'Model of Care' will be of immense assistance to health professionals in providing effective support to families who have lost a loved child, and I urge them to avail of it. |
