- The School Manager should ensure that all staff are fully aware
of the facts, as well as the myths, about SIDS. To assist this, ISIDA's
training video for professionals should form part of teachers' in
service training programme.
- Be aware that childrens reactions to, and perceptions of, death
are dependent on their age, experience, personality and family circumstances.
If a child's behaviour is a cause for concern, advise the School Counsellor
and Community Social Worker.
- Always refer to the dead child by his/her name and acknowledge the
reality of the child's death to siblings and the family.
- Reassure the children that no-one is to blame for the child's death.
- If there are siblings, ensure that all teachers with whom they have
contact are aware of the bereavement, so that expectations can be
adjusted where necessary and so that no unwittingly distressing comments
are made.
- When a sibling moves from his/her current school, ensure that the
new school is also informed of the death of his/her brother/sister.

Remember that the sudden death of an infant or young child normally
affects all who come into contact with it. If you feel that
you would like to talk to someone, ISIDA provides a confidential
Nationwide Helpline 1800 391 391
where you can contact someone who understands and is willing
to listen - you do not have to be a parent or relative.
