Italian: Dictionaries and glossaries
For English-Italian, Italian-English and multilingual dictionaries, both
general and specialized, see the list in the index page.
Here I'm only going to list monolingual Italian dictionaries and Italian dialect
or slang dictionaries (note on the word "dialect": here it means any
romance language variety spoken in Italy, with the exception of Standard Italian).
For now, the only dialect listed is Genovese. I apologise to the rest,
but I haven't been able to find the time for further searches: if you know any
other Italian dialect resource on the Net, please
let me know!
- Digita® Web: Online Italian dictionary
from Garzanti Editore

This page calls itself "The first online dictionary of the Italian language -
200,000 words and meanings", and the description seems to fit the contents.
This is a true monolingual Italian dictionary with online search, and with
pronunciation, short etimology and full definitions for each word.
It's certainly the only site of this kind that I'm aware of, and it's completely
free to use (no registration needed either).
From the same site you can also access Digita
Scrivi, a page with further services from Garzanti Editore. Among the
services that can be accessed after a free registration there are conjugation
tables for all Italian verbs, answers to common questions about the Italian
language and a thesaurus. (The same page also offers "revision services",
but you have to pay for those, unlike the previous ones).
- Zena dunde te? - A site
about Genova and its language [02 August 2000]
This site includes, among various other things, an Italian-Genovese dictionary
with Italian terms in alphabetical order (one HTML page per initial letter)
and the Genovese translation beside each term. This dictionary is not
comprehensive, but it's the best that I could find since the PrimoNet dictionary
went offline.
- Genovese-Italiano:

Words and idioms, particularly referring to body parts, medicine, food, gastronomy
and everyday life. The author of this site says that these are the terms that
couldn't be found on the PrimoNet online dictionary (see below). It's a single,
well-presented HTML page with an alphabetical list of Genovese terms and
expressions, each with its Italian translation. On a separate page there's also
a Mini-glossary
of zoological terms, sorted by kinds of animal.
- Genovese-Italiano
and Italiano-Genovese online dictionary at PrimoNet
Gives an online translation, with part of speech information but
without definitions. The first Italian dialect dictionary I've managed
to find on the Web: if you know some more, please
let me know!
Unfortunately, this dictionary has disappeared some months ago. The hosting
site claims to be doing "maintenance"; I'm keeping the link for
the moment, in the hope that it will become active again sooner or later.

del gergo giovanile from the University of Bologna.
A dictionary of youth jargon. A very ambitious and praiseworthy
project; currently only one region is actually represented, Emilia-Romagna,
with 3 downloadable .zip archives for the jargon in the city of
Cesena.
- Antologia (frammentaria)
della Letteratura Italiana
maintained by the Associazione Liber Liber
A collection of classics and modern texts, both prose and poetry.
Includes among other things the lyrics of the Italian national
anthem.

The whole Bible in Italian, in the official version from CEI (Conference
of Italian Bishops)

Links to various texts and resources on Italian dialects.
- Lingua e

Links to text and resources on Italian dialects in general and
on various specific dialects. This page also contains links to
resources on other European minority languages.
- Genovese
dialect on PrimoNet
Poems, proverbs and an online Genovese-Italian / Italian-Genovese
dictionary
(with translations and part of speech, but no definitions). The
pages are also available in English.
- Dizionario
mitologico (Dictionary of Mythology) on Rete I-2000net
Gives descriptions and explanations (in Italian only) on lots of
characters from classical (Graeco-Roman) mythology. Frame-based
with alphabetical index, but can also be downloaded in one zip
file.
- Dizionari bilingui
(Bilingual dictionaries)
Freeware software dictionaries from Italian to many other languages
(Afrikaans, Danish, Finnish, French, Japanese, English, Latin,
Norwegian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, German,
Hungarian). I haven't been able to find out what platform they
run under.
- WinDi Translation Help
A "translation helper" program for Windows with dictionary,
conjugation and grammar tools in seven languages (Dutch, English,
French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish), and an "interactive
sentence translation" tool to help translating sentences between
all seven languages. The page contains a freeware "Lite"
version for download and an online demonstration of the conjugation
tool.
- Giorgio
Musilli's tools
Italian-English automatic translators and additional dictionary
for Italian Assistant for Windows. The English-Italian translator
has 160.000 words and can be expanded; the Italian-English one
has more. Both are shareware for DOS and very cheap. They claim
to produce complete automatic translation "without errors".

- Ergane
A freeware translation program (for Win 3.1) which uses Esperanto
as auxiliary language. More than 40 available (including English
and Italian)
