Each year, since 1998, the pupils of Scoil Phádraig Naofa, are invited to make 50 St. Brigid Crosses for an event which honours women of Irish heritage in Chicago. The crosses are used as table centre pieces at a fundraising Gala dinner, on St Brigid's Day, Feb 1st. The proceeds are donated to CONCERN. With great enthusiasm the children spend months perfecting their cross making skills before the final fifty are ready to be shipped off to Chicago. The crosses are blessed before being sent off. The organizers of The Brigid Awards, represented by Estelle Shanley, paid a visited to the school in early May 1999 to thank the children by the way of a special donation. Her husband, John Duff, then President of Columbia College, Chicago, offered a 4 year scholarship to any graduate of Scoil Phádraig Naofa wishing to attend Columbia. Hopefully in 2002 a teacher and two pupils will go to Chicago to attend the dinner in person.
