The Ven. Lama
Panchen
Ötrul
Rinpoche
was born in Kham round about the year 1939. He was born to a nomadic family.
Because of various conditions surrounding his birth it was seen that he
was probably the reincarnation of a high lama. As a result of this he was
eventually taken to live at the local monastery of Dolma Lhakang
where he was cared for by two lamas, who spend their life in meditation.
When he was seven it was thought he was the re-incarnation of a Gelugpa
lama and he was taken to Pashu, the main Gelugpa Monastery in the
area. His teacher here was a renowned Mongolian scholar. It was with
this lama that Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche took his refuge vows
At this time he was given the name of Kelzang Chokyi Wangchuk, which means
'Fortunate Lord of the Dharma'. In 1951 Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche was
taken to Lhasa as a possible reincarnation of the Panchen Lama. However
a candidate from Amdo was selected. Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche was taken
into the care of the Tibetan government and Tashi Lunpo monastery and was
given the title of Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche which means 'Panchen candidate'.
From
then onwards he lived in Lhasa and studied at Drepung Gomang Monastery.
He was ordained when he was 13 years old. In 1959 after the Chinese Communist
took control of Tibet, Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche with many other was
put in a concentration camp. In 1960 after being there for twelve months
he was able to escape into India. In 1962 he received full ordination from
H.H. the Dalai Lama. In 1971 he received his Acharya (equivalent to an
M.A. degree in Buddhist philosophy) from Benares University, India. In
1980 he was awarded the highest degree, Geshe Lharampa - which is the equivalent
of a Buddhist doctorate. He completed his formal studies of Buddhist Tantra
at Gyumed College in Southern India. During that period he helped in the
re-establishment of Tibetan Monasteries in India by designing study programmes.
In 1988 he travelled
to the U.K. on behalf of the Dalai Lama to work on inter-faith dialogue.
Since then he has travelled extensively teaching in Europe, U.S.A., Canada
and the Far East. In 1990 he was invited by Irish students to become Spiritual
Director of Jampa Ling Buddhist Centre in West Cavan, Southern Ireland,
and more recently Jampa Ling, Belfast. The Tashi Khyil Trust was founded
as a fund raising charity for Rinpoche`s growing activities. He maintains
strong connections with Drepung Gomang monastery in Southern India, finding
sponsors for monks and fund raising to help with new buildings.
It
has always been his wish and prayer that he would be able to help with
the re-establishment of Buddhism in Mongolia. He now visits there each
year working both in Ulaan Baator the capital city and travelling to remote
areas, ordaining monks, giving teaching wherever he can, giving initiations,
refuge, visiting prisons, childrens` schools and camps. Panchen Ötrul
Rinpoche has travelled extensively in order to teach in Europe U.S.A.,
Canada and the Far East.

Panchen Ötrul
Rinpoche, Margery & Jampa Ling
- some personal remarks |
|
We met our teacher
and friend Lama Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche when he just moved from Scotland
to Ireland (1989). Our beloved Margery Cross (now a Buddhist nun) had invited
Rinpoche to establish a Buddhist centre in Ireland to spread the Buddhist
teachings in this country. This centre, called Jampa Ling is situated in
the beautiful landscape of Co. Cavan and offers various courses and workshops
with Rinpoche since the late eighties. The growing centre is under the
patronage of H.H. The Dalai Lama. There is a very good and warm connection
and inter-action between Rinpoche's centre and Manjushri Mandala. On various
occasions Rinpoche and Margery come to our place to give teachings or having
some relaxing holidays, while they invited us to give astrology courses
at Jampa Ling. A highlight was a course
given by both, Lama Gangchen Tulku and Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche at our
centre in 1990.
We
admire Rinpoche not just for having a profound knowledge on Buddhist philosophy
and tantra, but also for his many activities not just in Ireland but also
concerning his monastery in India and for his many travels to Mongolia
to re-establish Buddhism there. Margery, also a former student of Lama
Yeshe, is beyond all description. She's just an outstanding personality.
Lovable, caring, witty, humorous, open-minded, enthusiastic, unique, deep
and crazy in her own way. She not only offered her house and grounds for
establishing Jampa Ling, she is also the good and untiring spirit keeping
it all together. Margery, you are simply a darling and miracle!
