Waterpollution in the North Sea
Aurich is located close to the North Sea so we thought this might be
also a good topic in connection with the water-project.
The Northsea is encircled by densely populated industrial nations and
is used intensively. Although the situation in the North Sea has improved
in the last years, for this 80 meters deep European inlandsea until yet
an all-clear cannot be given.
Here are still landing up to
1,5 million barrels of nitrogen,
100.000 barrels of phosphorus,
28.000 barrels of zinc,
11.000 barrels of lead,
4.500 barrels of copper,
950 barrels of arsenic,
335 barrels of cadmium
and
75 barells of
quicksilver.
Heavy consequences are feared, all first for the mud-flats which are the "upbringing" for many fishes and birds. By the initiation of the Federal Government all countries bordering on the North Sea have already decided in the middle of the eighties, to devide the harmful substance-entry in half. Also they want to finish the waste-incineration on sea. The protection of the North Sea was enlarged through the Agreement from the 22.9.1992, in which the burning of waste on sea and the input of industrial pollution is prohibited for the Northatlantic states by an international law.
