With two of the great river valleys of the South East running
through it - the River Barrow and the River Slaney - Co. Carlow
is one of the great focal points of Ireland's ancient history.
The tangible presence of Celts, Druids and early Christian settlements
are still a fascinating and enthralling part of the Carlow of today.
Known as the "Dolmen County", you'll find these massive stone
reminders of our heritage dotted among small and interesting towns
and villages that appear to have stood still as if the pace of
modern time has passed them by. Centuries of abbeys, castles
and churches remain to carry our ancient history forward to tomorrow.
But side by side with our yesterdays is the Co. Carlow of today
with a range of modern leisure activities that offer the welcome
visitor plenty of other opportunities to enjoy themselves.
From superb angling and boating to championship golf, walking,
cycling or horse riding over an untouched landscape or browsing
through shops and craft centres displaying the very best of
local skill and craftsmanship.
